Great Western Road, Bike Trail To Reopen Saturday

HARWICH --- Sections of Great Western Road and the Cape Cod Rail Trail closed after last week’s oil spill will reopen on Saturday, just in time for the Memorial Day weekend, emergency management officials announced last Friday afternoon.

The roadway and bike trail will reopen to all traffic at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 24, according to a press release from Harwich Emergency Management.

Both the roadway and the bike path have been repaved and marked.

The road and bike path were closed May 14 after a pickup truck struck an oil tanker at the corner of Great Western Road and Lothrop Avenue. Thousands of gallons of number 2 heating oil spilled from the damaged tanker, and between 1,000 and 2,000 gallons entered the surrounding environment.
