On
Wednesday May 14, a pickup truck ran a stop sign and collided with an oil truck
carrying over 10,000 gallons of heating oil at the intersection of Great Western
Road and Lothrop Avenue in Harwich.
Because of the oil spill, the crash
forced the indefinite closure of a section of the Cape Cod Rail Trail, which
runs parallel to Great Western Road. Bicyclists
can detour on local roads between Railroad and Lothrop avenues. The
town is still worried about soil contamination and the spill's impact on a vernal
pool, a temporary wetland over an acre that is home to spring peepers and salamanders. On
Thursday afternoon, absorbent booms snaked through the pool to try to isolate
contamination. The smell of fuel oil still lingered in the air. |
